Lifespan of Biblical Figures from Adam to Moses

Metushelach

The graph above shows the recorded ages at death of key biblical figures from Adam to Moses (excluding one outlier, Enoch). A striking feature is the sharp decline in lifespans following the generation of Noah. This pattern resembles a phase transition — a rapid, systemic shift. While the biblical text attributes this shift to divine intervention following the Flood, another possible explanation is environmental: the onset of copper metallurgy (the Chalcolithic period) may have led to widespread copper contamination in water sources. Chronic exposure to heavy metals like copper can damage human health over generations, potentially leading to the observed decline in longevity.
